Start by talking to your advisors at high school (around the beginning of junior year) about schools and scholarships. They can provide you with dates, and scholarships you may not find online. Different scholarships have different application dates. They may also be able to provide you with school info- which you can also find online! You can also apply for FASFA, a government grand program. I know you have to apply for this several months in advance, but I'm not sure if you have to be enrolled or accepted into a particular university before applying. If you're not one of those select few with super high scores, then a lot of big scholarships go out of the door. The idea that millions go unclaimed is more of a myth.
